Total Film Reviews

Here we have chosen three film reviews from Total magazine; we have chosen to study 2 alternative magazines so that we have a clear understanding of how other magazines work. We wanted to be able to compare and contrast the different methods used by Empire and Total, so that we are able to incorporate these ideas into our production.

Empire Magazine Review Pages

Here are a selection of film reviews from Empire magazine, we have individually looked at 5 reviews from Empire in order to give us a general feel and direction when we come to make our own reviews. Out of the 15 reviews we have looked at we will collectively choose 5 that we feel capture the codes and conventions of Empire. We will then look at these codes and conventions further to aid us in producing our own review pages.

Empire Review Notes

Page layout

- The majority of major films seem to be double page spreads

- Stills from the movie occupy the majority of the page

- Half of the page is text, other half is often used a picture, or the image is used as a background

- Typography; mainly black text on white background

- Colour is used in headings and subheadings for emphasis

Written techniques

- Colloquial; starts with brief explanation along with history of theme, genre, director etc.

- Moves onto interview style through use of quotes from actors and directors

- Analysis of the effectiveness of the film; good and bad points

- No ratings
